Spotted
The Semicollared Hawk is a small, rarely seen raptor of South American rainforests, named for the subtle collar-like marking on its neck. It is a secretive and elusive forest hunter.
Where to spot
Found in northern South America, including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. It inhabits tropical moist montane and foothill forests.
How to spot
An extremely challenging bird to observe. Focus on the mid-story and canopy of dense montane forests. Listen intently for any calls, as visual sightings are often brief.
When to spot
Observations are very scarce. Like other forest raptors, it is active during daylight hours, but specific patterns are not well documented.
Very little is known about the breeding biology and detailed ecology of the Semicollared Hawk due to its rarity and dense, remote habitat.
