The Blue Waxbill is a small, widespread, and beloved finch found across much of Southern and Central Africa. Both sexes display beautiful blue plumage on the face, rump, and flanks.
Where to spot
Widespread in grasslands, savannas, woodlands, and cultivated areas across Southern and Central Africa, extending north to parts of East Africa.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground for seeds or in low bushes. The blue coloration on its face and flanks is distinctive. Listen for its soft, high-pitched 'tsip' calls.
When to spot
Year-round and readily observable, often in small to large flocks.
This adaptable species is often found near human habitation and can become quite tame, visiting bird feeders.
