Spotted

Where to spot
Highly localized in specific damp grasslands and floodplains in parts of Central and Southern Africa, including DR Congo, Zambia, and Botswana.
How to spot
Requires significant effort. Listen intently for its distinctive, buzzing 'locust' song emanating from dense grass. Look for males briefly perching on grass stems.
When to spot
Year-round, but notoriously difficult to find. Best chances during the dry season when water levels recede slightly.
This finch gets its name from its unusual, insect-like buzzing song, which remarkably mimics the sound of a large grasshopper or locust.
