The Blue-faced Rail is a large, terrestrial rail endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is characterized by its striking bare blue facial skin, bright red bill, and largely dark plumage. It inhabits montane forests, often near streams, and is a magnificent and elusive bird.

How to spot
Look for its large size, dark plumage, and unmistakable blue bare facial skin with a red bill. It is generally shy and prefers dense undergrowth, so patience and quiet movement in its forest habitat are required. Listen for its deep, booming calls.
