Spotted
A small, somewhat stocky lark found in high-altitude environments, characterized by its streaky brown upperparts and paler underparts. It often has a faint pale supercilium.
Where to spot
High-altitude grasslands, rocky slopes, and alpine meadows in the Horn of Africa, particularly Ethiopia and Eritrea.
How to spot
Scan open, high-altitude terrain. Look for its terrestrial habits, walking and running between tussocks. Its flight is often low and direct. Listen for its short, chirping song.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the breeding season (spring/early summer) when males are most active in display flights and singing.
Blanford's Lark is one of the highest-dwelling lark species, often found foraging in alpine meadows and rocky plateaus well above the tree line.
