Arid and semi-arid grasslands, sparse scrub, and open stony plains in Southern Africa.
How to spot
Scan open ground. Males are easier to identify with their black markings. Look for their low, undulating flight or listen for their thin, high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Observable year-round. More vocal and conspicuous during the breeding season (spring/summer).
