Spotted
The Black-tailed Trogon is a striking bird with iridescent green upperparts, a vibrant red belly, and a uniform black or dark grey tail. It is a widespread resident of Amazonian rainforests.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Amazon basin and adjacent regions of South America, found in humid lowland rainforests and mature secondary growth.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, deep, often two-note hooting calls. Look for it perched motionless in the mid-story or lower canopy of dense forests. The plain dark tail is key for identification.
When to spot
Diurnal, active throughout the day, though often sitting quietly for extended periods.
