Spotted
The Mountain Trogon is a magnificent bird found in the highlands of Mexico and Central America. Males are characterized by their iridescent green upperparts, bright red belly, and a vibrant yellow bill, with females being more subdued in color.
Where to spot
Distributed from central Mexico south through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Inhabits humid pine-oak forests, cloud forests, and evergreen montane forests at elevations typically above 1,200 meters.
How to spot
Scan the mid-story and sub-canopy for its characteristic upright perch. The male's red belly and yellow bill are clear identification marks. Listen for its common, deep, hooting 'co-ah, co-ah' call that resonates through the forest.
When to spot
Resident year-round within its montane range. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon.

Unlike many lowland trogons, the Mountain Trogon often occurs at higher elevations, adapting to cooler, humid mountain cloud forests.
