The Mountain Trogon is a magnificent bird found in the highlands of Mexico and Central America. Males are characterized by their iridescent green upperparts, bright red belly, and a vibrant yellow bill, with females being more subdued in color.
Where to spot
Distributed from central Mexico south through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Inhabits humid pine-oak forests, cloud forests, and evergreen montane forests at elevations typically above 1,200 meters.
How to spot
Scan the mid-story and sub-canopy for its characteristic upright perch. The male's red belly and yellow bill are clear identification marks. Listen for its common, deep, hooting 'co-ah, co-ah' call that resonates through the forest.
When to spot
Resident year-round within its montane range. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon.
