Widespread across the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Colombia. Inhabits humid lowland forests, especially terra firme and varzea forests.

Look for this trogon perched quietly in the forest mid-story or sub-canopy. The male's brilliant rufous belly and iridescent green back are good identification marks. Listen for its soft, resonant hooting calls.
