Where to spot
Breeds in the Arctic tundra of Russia, migrating to winter in Northwestern Europe, particularly the UK, Netherlands, and Germany. Look for them in wetlands, flooded fields, and estuaries.
How to spot
Distinguish from Whooper Swan by its smaller size, shorter neck, and the yellow/orange on its bill not extending as far as the nostrils, being more rounded and limited to the base of the bill. Listen for their higher-pitched, yelping calls.
When to spot
Best observed during the winter months (October to March) in their European wintering grounds. Migration periods in autumn and spring also offer opportunities.
