Spotted
A hybrid exhibiting traits from both the rich brown Ferruginous Duck and the distinctive black-and-white Tufted Duck.
Where to spot
Freshwater lakes, ponds, and slow rivers across Eurasia where both parent species are found.
How to spot
Look for a duck with a dark brown or dusky body, possibly a small crest, and a subtle mix of bill and eye colors. The undertail coverts might show an intermediate pattern, being less starkly white than a pure Tufted Duck.
When to spot
Year-round in suitable habitats, but more frequent during migration periods when ducks congregate.

This hybrid can be particularly tricky to identify, as the dark plumage of the Tufted Duck can mask the subtle features of the Ferruginous Duck, making it appear as an aberrant pure species.
