Spotted
This hybrid combines the distinctive, large spatulate bill of the Northern Shoveler with traits of the common Mallard. Identification can be challenging due to the wide variability in plumage patterns and bill characteristics.
Where to spot
Shallow wetlands, marshes, and slow-moving rivers across North America, Europe, and Asia where both parent species occur.
How to spot
Focus on bill size and shape – it will be noticeably larger than a pure Mallard's, but perhaps not as extreme as a pure Shoveler's. Plumage may show hints of both species' colors and patterns, such as patches of rufous or green from the Shoveler and the Mallard's speculum.
When to spot
During migration or breeding seasons, often seen in mixed flocks with parent species.

The unique filter-feeding bill of the Shoveler parent is a key adaptation, and hybrids may exhibit a bill size and shape that is intermediate, impacting their feeding style.
