Spotted
This is a hybrid resulting from the cross between a North American Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) and an Asian Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata). Both parent species are renowned for their stunning, ornate plumage, and the hybrid often inherits a mix of these spectacular traits.
Where to spot
Primarily found in zoological parks, private collections, or areas with feral populations of both species, particularly in Europe or parts of North America where Mandarin Ducks have established populations.
How to spot
Look for a bird with an extravagant mix of the crest, eye stripes, and ornate body patterns of both the Wood Duck and Mandarin Duck. Plumage colors will be a unique blend of their vivid greens, purples, oranges, and whites.
When to spot
Observable year-round, typically in ponds or quiet waterways where the parent species or their hybrids are kept or have established populations.

The Wood Duck and Mandarin Duck are closely related and belong to the same genus (Aix), making hybridization relatively common between them, especially in captive settings. The offspring are often fertile, unlike many other waterfowl hybrids.
