Spotted
The Antillean Nighthawk is a migratory species primarily found in the Caribbean, known for its rapid, buoyant flight as it hunts insects over open landscapes and coastal areas. It is very similar to the Common Nighthawk.
Where to spot
Breeds throughout the Caribbean islands and coastal Florida. Migrates to northern South America for the non-breeding season. Found in open habitats, including scrublands, clearings, pastures, and urban edges.
How to spot
Listen for its unique 'pik-pik-pik' call, which is a key differentiator from the Common Nighthawk. Look for its agile flight over open areas at twilight. During the day, it rests camouflaged on the ground or low structures.
When to spot
Highly active during crepuscular periods (dusk and dawn) and throughout the night, foraging for insects. Occasionally seen in flight during the day.

This nighthawk has a call that is distinctly different from the Common Nighthawk – a sharper, more rapid 'pik-pik-pik' – which is the primary way to differentiate the two species in the field.
