Spotted
This hybrid combines the distinct patterns of the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) with the widespread Canada Goose (Branta canadensis). It results in a striking bird with a mix of dark and light plumage features.
Where to spot
Open grasslands, wetlands, and coastal areas, particularly in Europe where Barnacle Geese are common, or in North America near captive waterfowl collections or where vagrant Barnacle Geese might encounter Canada Geese.
How to spot
Look for a bird with the overall dark body of a Canada Goose but with extensive white on the face and forecrown, reminiscent of a Barnacle Goose. The breast might be lighter gray, and the neck could show a less defined 'chinstrap' or more extensive white. Size will be intermediate.
When to spot
Potentially year-round in areas with resident populations or during migration periods of the Canada Goose if a vagrant Barnacle Goose is involved.
While Barnacle Geese are native to the Arctic and primarily winter in Europe, hybrids with Canada Geese can occur where populations overlap, or through escaped birds from captive collections in other parts of the world.
