Spotted
This hybrid results from a cross between the Mallard and the Eastern Spot-billed Duck, commonly occurring where their ranges overlap in East Asia. It exhibits a blend of characteristics from both parents, making it a nuanced identification.
Where to spot
Wetlands, lakes, and coastal areas throughout East Asia, including Japan, Korea, and parts of China.
How to spot
Identify by looking for a predominantly dark body with a yellow-tipped black bill, but with some green head sheen or a more vibrant blue/purple speculum typical of a Mallard. The facial markings may also be a mix of both species.
When to spot
Year-round, as these species are generally resident.
Like its Indian counterpart, the Eastern Spot-billed Duck also has distinctive yellow spots near the bill's base, which can be a useful, albeit variable, hybrid indicator.
