Mallard x Mexican Duck Hybrid

Spotted
This hybrid results from the interbreeding of the common Mallard and the Mexican Duck, particularly prevalent in areas where their ranges overlap in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Its appearance is intermediate and highly variable.
Where to spot
Freshwater habitats across the southwestern US and Mexico where both species are present.
How to spot
Look for individuals that are generally duller than a typical male Mallard but show some green head iridescence or a brighter speculum than a pure Mexican Duck. Variability in bill color and body pattern is high, making careful comparison necessary.
When to spot
Year-round, as the parent species are largely resident.
Hybridization with Mallards is a significant threat to the genetic integrity of the Mexican Duck, potentially leading to its genetic absorption into the broader Mallard population.
