Spotted
The Banded Antbird is a distinctive and often shy species, characterized by its striking black and white barring on its underparts. It forages primarily on the forest floor among leaf litter.
Where to spot
Humid lowland rainforests of the western Amazon Basin, including southeastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and western Brazil.
How to spot
Look on the forest floor in primary and mature secondary forests, particularly in areas with dense leaf litter. It can be very shy, so patience and quiet observation are essential. Listening for its characteristic calls can also help.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings or late afternoons when ground activity is highest.

Unlike many antbirds that forage higher up, the Banded Antbird is a true ground-dweller, often flicking leaves with its bill or feet to uncover insects and other invertebrates.
