The Band-backed Wren is a large, conspicuous wren known for its striking black and white barred back and rich rufous underparts. It is a highly vocal and social bird.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid evergreen forests, forest edges, and second growth, often near water, from Mexico south through Central America to western Ecuador.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, often rattling or churring songs, frequently performed by multiple birds in a duet. Look for a large, boldly patterned wren foraging in dense tangles or climbing trees.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, particularly during the breeding season.
