The Ballara Grasswren is a recently recognized species, highly restricted to specific rocky habitats with spinifex in Queensland, Australia. Its dark coloration provides excellent camouflage against the dark rock formations.
Where to spot
Restricted to rocky hills and gorges with spinifex grasslands in a small area of north-west Queensland, Australia.
How to spot
Focus observation efforts in appropriate rocky spinifex habitats. Walk slowly and quietly, scanning for subtle movements and listening for their calls, as they are very adept at staying hidden.
When to spot
Early morning is generally the best time, as they become less active during the heat of the day.
