Spotted
The Andean Goose is a large, predominantly white goose with striking black wings, specifically adapted to the high-altitude wetlands of the Andes Mountains in South America. It is a terrestrial grazer, often found far from water.
Where to spot
Found exclusively in the high-altitude puna grasslands, bogs, and lakes of the Andes Mountains, ranging from Peru and Bolivia south through Chile and Argentina.
How to spot
Look for its large size, pure white body plumage, and contrasting black primary and secondary flight feathers (visible even when at rest). The bill and legs are typically pinkish. Often seen grazing in fields or resting on shorelines at high elevations.
When to spot
A year-round resident within its high-altitude range. Some populations may undertake short altitudinal migrations in response to severe weather or food availability.

Unlike most waterfowl, Andean Geese are highly terrestrial, preferring to graze on dry grasslands and rocky slopes at high altitudes. They are excellent walkers and rarely enter deep water.
