Spotted
The Australasian Darter is a graceful, long-necked water bird found in Australia, New Zealand, and surrounding islands. It is a proficient underwater hunter, using its pointed bill to spear fish.
Where to spot
Widespread throughout Australia, New Zealand, and parts of New Guinea. Inhabits various freshwater wetlands, lakes, rivers, and estuaries.
How to spot
Look for its slender body, unusually long, sinuous neck, and pointed bill. Observe its 'snake-like' swimming with body submerged, or its characteristic wing-spreading posture on a perch near water. Males are dark with a white facial stripe, females are paler with a brown cap.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Most active during the day for foraging, and often seen drying its feathers in the sun.
