Open grasslands, savannas, and arid scrublands from the southwestern USA through Mexico, Central America, and South America to Tierra del Fuego.
How to spot
Look for its striking pattern: grey upperparts, white supercilium, black eye-stripe and malar stripe, white throat, and a rufous (aplomado) belly band. Often perches on tall structures or trees and hunts with rapid, dashing flights.

Active during the day, often seen hunting at dawn and dusk. Observable year-round, though some northern populations are migratory.
