Spotted
The Angola Rock Thrush is a beautiful bird of central and southern Africa, with males sporting a vibrant blue-grey head and throat, a chestnut belly, and dark upperparts. Females are generally duller.
Where to spot
Found across parts of central and southern Africa, including Angola, DRC, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, inhabiting miombo woodlands, rocky hills, and open savannas.
How to spot
Look in open woodlands and rocky areas, often perched on trees, shrubs, or boulders. The male's vibrant blue-grey and chestnut plumage is a key identifier. Listen for its distinctive, melodic song.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the breeding season (typically wet season, Oct-Mar) when males are more vocal and visible.
Unlike some rock thrushes, this species has a relatively wide altitudinal range, being found from lowland woodlands up to higher elevation rocky hills.
