Spotted
A tiny, iridescent hummingbird named for the male's dazzling amethyst-purple throat and breast. It typically has a relatively short, straight bill and a deeply forked tail.
Where to spot
Inhabits diverse habitats including dry and humid forests, forest edges, savannas, and shrublands across a wide range in South America, from Venezuela to Argentina.
How to spot
Look for its diminutive size and the male's striking amethyst gorget. Females and immatures are duller but can be identified by their small size and general shape. Often found visiting small flowers.
When to spot
Present year-round in most of its vast range, with some local movements in response to seasonal flowering. Active throughout the day.
