The Speckled Hummingbird is a widespread and common hummingbird found in the Andes, known for its subtly beautiful, speckled plumage and distinctive facial markings. It is a robust and adaptable species.
Where to spot
Widespread throughout the Andes, from northern Venezuela south through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Inhabits humid montane forests, cloud forests, and forest edges.
How to spot
A common sight in its range, often visiting a wide variety of flowers. Look for its green upperparts, whitish underparts with dusky speckling, and a prominent black ear patch bordered by white lines.
When to spot
Active year-round, with peak activity during flowering seasons. Best observed during daylight hours, especially mornings and late afternoons.
