Spotted
The Dusky Starfrontlet is a relatively recently recognized species, distinct from other starfrontlets by its more subdued, often darker, iridescent plumage. It's a specialist of high-altitude paramo and elfin forest habitats.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high Andes of Colombia, particularly known from the Western and Central Cordilleras. It inhabits paramo edge and elfin forest, often at very high elevations, typically above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet).
How to spot
Search for it in open areas within its high-altitude habitat, especially near flowering plants. Its darker plumage can make it blend in, so look for its rapid flight and listen for its characteristic calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen feeding on a variety of high-altitude flowers. As a resident species, it can be observed year-round.

The Dusky Starfrontlet was formerly considered a subspecies of the Buff-winged Starfrontlet (*Coeligena lutetiae*), but genetic and morphological differences led to its recognition as a full species, highlighting ongoing discoveries in avian taxonomy.
