Spotted
A unique, slate-gray aquatic songbird of western North and Central America, often found along clear, fast-flowing mountain streams. It is renowned for its ability to dive and 'walk' underwater.
Where to spot
Fast-flowing, cold mountain streams and rivers in western North America, from Alaska and Canada south through the Rockies and other mountain ranges to Central America.
How to spot
Look for a plump, gray bird constantly bobbing (dipping) on rocks in swift water. Watch for it plunging headfirst into the stream, often disappearing for considerable periods to forage on the bottom.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during daylight hours, especially in summer along breeding streams.

The American Dipper has a special transparent eyelid (nicitating membrane) that allows it to see clearly underwater, helping it hunt aquatic insects and larvae.
