Spotted
This hybrid duck is a result of interbreeding between the American Black Duck and the Northern Pintail. Individuals typically display an intriguing combination of the darker plumage of the Black Duck with some of the elegant shape and markings of the Pintail, making them a distinct, though rare, sight.
Where to spot
Primarily observed in eastern North America, particularly where the breeding and wintering ranges of both the American Black Duck and Northern Pintail overlap. Look in freshwater and brackish marshes, coastal estuaries, and flooded timber.
How to spot
Search for a dark-bodied duck with a contrasting paler head and neck, possibly showing a faint malar stripe or a slightly elongated tail. The bill might be a duller yellow-orange than a pure Pintail's, and the speculum may be less vibrant than either parent.
When to spot
Most likely to be seen during migration periods (spring and fall) or in wintering grounds when both parent species are present in large numbers.

The American Black Duck is under conservation concern partly due to extensive hybridization with the more numerous Mallard, which can dilute its genetic distinctness. Hybridization with Northern Pintails is less common but still occurs.
