A small, highly localized sunbird, male Amani Sunbirds are iridescent green above with a pale belly. Females are duller. It is a rare species of threatened coastal forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to a few coastal forest patches in Tanzania, specifically the Amani-Sigi forest and similar areas.
How to spot
Requires dedicated searching within the remaining fragments of coastal forest. Listen for its high-pitched calls and look for it visiting flowering trees.
When to spot
Observable year-round, but very difficult to find due to its rarity and specific habitat. Best efforts in the early morning.
The Amani Sunbird is considered critically endangered due to its extremely restricted range within fragmented coastal forests of East Africa, highlighting conservation urgency.
