Endemic to the Amami Islands (Amami-Oshima, Kakeromajima, Ukejima, Tokunoshima) in Japan, typically found in evergreen broadleaf forests.
How to spot
Focus on dense, undisturbed forest habitats. Due to its elusive nature and conservation status, quiet observation and careful searching of the forest floor are essential.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring) and active during early mornings and late evenings.
