Spotted
The Afghan Babbler is a distinctive species found in the arid and semi-arid regions of Afghanistan and surrounding countries. It is characterized by its plain brown plumage with faint streaking and a relatively long tail.
Where to spot
Found in Afghanistan, parts of Iran, Pakistan, and Central Asia. Inhabits arid plains, stony deserts, scrubland, and dry riverbeds with sparse vegetation.
How to spot
Listen for its rather harsh, chattering calls. Look for groups of brown birds foraging on the ground or in low thorny bushes. Its preference for open, arid habitats is a key indicator.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Often observed in small, cohesive groups.
This species often forages in open, stony desert areas, where it relies on its cryptic coloration to blend in with the sparse vegetation and rocky terrain.
