Jerdon's Laughingthrush is a distinctive and localized babbler found in the Western Ghats of southern India. It is recognized by its plain brownish plumage with a slightly darker head and faint streaking.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Western Ghats of southern India, specifically in high-altitude grasslands (shola-grassland mosaic) and stunted montane evergreen forests.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often loud and melodious, whistling calls. Look for it foraging on the ground or in low shrubs at forest edges. Its rather plain appearance requires attention to its calls and habitat for positive identification.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Vocalizations increase during the breeding season.
