Meek's Ptiloprora is a medium-sized honeyeater endemic to New Guinea. It is characterized by its olive-brown plumage and faint streaking on the underparts.
Where to spot
Endemic to the mountains of New Guinea, found primarily in southeastern Papua New Guinea. It inhabits montane forests and forest edges, typically at elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 meters.
How to spot
Look for its olive-brown upperparts, paler underparts with faint streaking, and a slender, decurved bill. It forages actively in the mid-story and subcanopy. Listen for its varied, often buzzy calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, feeding on nectar, insects, and small fruits. As a resident species within its specific montane habitat, it can be observed year-round.
This species is named after Albert Stewart Meek, an English natural history collector who made significant collections in New Guinea and other Pacific islands.
