Spotted
The Itombwe Flycatcher (*Muscicapa sethsmithi*) is a rare and localized African flycatcher, closely related to the Yellow-footed Flycatcher. It is a small, plain brown bird with a relatively short tail and pale feet.
Where to spot
Restricted to the montane forests of the Itombwe Mountains in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It prefers dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Patience and quiet observation in its dense forest habitat are crucial. Look for its small size and drab plumage. Listening for its soft, high-pitched calls can help pinpoint its location.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Due to its elusive nature and restricted range, observation is challenging. It is typically most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
This species is named after the Itombwe Mountains in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it was first discovered and remains largely confined.
