Spotted
The Kinglet Calyptura is a tiny, distinctive tyrant flycatcher with a unique, somewhat flattened and broad bill. It is an elusive bird of the forest canopy.
Where to spot
Found in scattered and localized populations across humid lowland and foothill forests of Central and South America, particularly in the Amazon basin and Atlantic Forest.
How to spot
Requires extreme patience and a good scope to spot high in the canopy. Look for its tiny size and unusual broad, flat bill. Its calls are often high-pitched and thin, serving as the primary way to detect it.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Extremely difficult to observe due to its small size, canopy preference, and elusive nature. Best chances are often with mixed-species flocks in the morning.
