The Vermilion Flycatcher is a brilliantly colored small flycatcher, with males sporting a vibrant scarlet body and dark mask. It is an iconic species of open, semi-arid habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread in open woodlands, riparian areas, deserts, and cultivated lands, from the southwestern United States through Mexico and Central America to most of South America.
How to spot
Look for the male's unmistakable bright red plumage on exposed perches. Observe its active sallying flights to catch insects. Females are paler with a peachy wash.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, especially conspicuous during the breeding season (spring/summer in its northern range). Observable year-round in tropical resident areas.
