Spotted
The Yellow-capped Pygmy-Parrot is one of the smallest parrot species in the world, found in the lowlands of New Guinea and surrounding islands. It is known for its agility on tree trunks.
Where to spot
Lowland rainforests and mangrove forests in New Guinea, the Aru Islands, and some smaller islands off western New Guinea.
How to spot
Look for its extremely small size, green plumage, and a yellowish cap. Often blends in perfectly with tree bark, so look closely for movement or listen for their soft, high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Active during the day. Best observed when they are quietly foraging on tree trunks. Observable year-round.

These tiny parrots are expert climbers, using their stiff tail feathers as a prop, much like woodpeckers, to scale tree trunks in search of insects and fungi.
