Spotted
A small, vibrant warbler native to New Guinea, the Yellow-bellied Gerygone is easily recognized by its bright yellow underparts. It's an active bird, often seen foraging in the mid to upper canopy of forests.
Where to spot
Found in lowland rainforests, forest edges, and secondary growth across New Guinea and some surrounding islands.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive yellow belly and listen for its sweet, varied song. It tends to be active in the canopy, so good binoculars are essential and patience is key.
When to spot
Best observed during daylight hours, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon when they are most active.
Despite its small size, the Yellow-bellied Gerygone has a surprisingly loud and melodious song, often a series of rich, whistling notes.
