Spotted
The Black-throated Grosbeak is a distinctive and somewhat uncommon songbird native to humid forests of southeastern South America. It is characterized by its sooty-black head and throat, contrasting with olive-green upperparts and a large, stout bill.
Where to spot
Found in southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Inhabits humid Atlantic Forest, particularly in mature or well-developed secondary forests.
How to spot
Look for its sooty-black head and throat contrasted with its olive body. It can be reclusive in dense forest. Listen for its loud, clear, whistled song, often a series of rapid notes that can be quite musical.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (typically September to February) and during early morning.

This species is often found in the mid-story and subcanopy of humid forests, where it forages for large insects and fruits, its dark plumage blending well with the shadows.
