Spotted
The Woodlark is a small, streaky brown lark with a short tail and a distinctive whitish supercilium that curves around the ear coverts. It is celebrated for its beautiful, melancholy, fluting song, often delivered in a circling display flight. It prefers open woodlands and heathlands.
Where to spot
Found across Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa. It inhabits open woodlands, heathlands, clearings, forest edges, young plantations, and sandy or heathery areas.
How to spot
Identify by its smaller size than the Skylark, shorter tail, and the distinctive pale eye-stripe. Listen intently for its liquid, fluting, descending song, which is a key identifier. They often forage on open ground but may perch on low branches or posts.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (spring and early summer) when males are actively singing their beautiful songs, often during their characteristic display flights.

The Woodlark's scientific name, 'Lullula,' is onomatopoeic, derived from its characteristic melodious song which sounds like 'lu-lu-lu.'
