This tiny hummingbird is named for the male's exceptionally long, often thin, and pointed outermost tail feathers. It showcases brilliant iridescent green plumage and a distinctive white breast band.
Where to spot
Humid tropical forests and forest edges in the Guiana Shield region of northeastern South America, including parts of Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern Brazil. Also isolated populations in Colombia and Ecuador. Typically below 800 meters.
How to spot
Search for it visiting small flowers in the forest understory or at the edge of clearings. Its rapid flight and small size require a keen eye and patience for observation.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon when flowers are most abundant.
