Endemic to the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic). It inhabits humid montane forests, particularly pine forests, often in areas with dense undergrowth, at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Look for its prominent white wing patch against an otherwise blackish body, and a distinctive white facial pattern including a supercilium and a small white spot below the eye. It often moves stealthily through dense foliage.

Resident year-round on Hispaniola. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often found foraging in the understory.
