The Banded Martin is a widespread swallow found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, easily identified by its distinctive dark breast band. It often associates with water bodies.
Where to spot
Open country, savannas, grasslands, and agricultural areas, always close to water bodies (rivers, lakes, dams) for nesting and foraging, throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
How to spot
Look for the clear, dark band across its chest, which makes it unmistakable. Observe its fast, agile flight over water as it catches insects. Often seen in small to large flocks.
When to spot
Year-round resident, though some populations may undertake local or seasonal movements. Active during daylight hours.
This species is known for nesting in burrows that it excavates itself, typically in sandy riverbanks, a common and observable trait among many martins.
