Spotted
A secretive and beautifully patterned heron of African forests, characterized by its cryptic striped plumage, especially on the neck and head, and a distinctive white crest.
Where to spot
Dense forest streams, rivers, and swamps in West and Central Africa. Highly elusive and rarely seen.
How to spot
Requires immense patience and keen eyes. Look for its striped plumage, especially the face and neck, and white crest if visible. Often remains perfectly still, blending into the background.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed quietly during dawn or dusk, or on overcast days, typically perched motionlessly at the water's edge.
Tiger-herons are named for their striped, camouflaged plumage, which helps them blend into their forest habitats while ambushing prey.
