Spotted
The White-browed Coucal is a widely distributed and distinctive species across much of Africa, easily identified by its prominent white eyebrow stripe. It is a common and vocal resident in many habitats.
Where to spot
Common in a wide variety of open to semi-open habitats across sub-Saharan Africa, including savannas, grasslands, agricultural areas, suburban gardens, and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its dark body, contrasting rufous wings, and unmistakable white eyebrow. Listen intently for its distinct series of bubbling calls, which are a primary identification feature and often betray its presence.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen foraging on the ground or in low bushes. Its characteristic descending bubbling 'coop-coop-coop' call is heard frequently, especially during the breeding season.

Unlike some of its cuckoo relatives, the White-browed Coucal is not a brood parasite; it builds its own camouflaged nest and raises its young, demonstrating dedicated parental care.
