Spotted
The White-backed Woodswallow is a striking and robust passerine bird with a distinctive white back that contrasts with its dark head and wings. It has a stout, pale bluish bill.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Sulawesi and some smaller surrounding islands in Indonesia, preferring open woodlands, forest edges, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Search for them perched conspicuously on dead trees or power lines at forest edges or in clearings. Their white back is a clear identifier, especially in flight.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its native range, active during daylight hours.
This woodswallow often hunts insects in a 'flycatching' manner, launching from a high perch to snatch prey in mid-air before returning to the same or a nearby perch.
