The Grey Currawong is a large, primarily grey songbird with white on its wingtips, undertail, and tail tip. It has bright yellow eyes and a robust bill, and is known for its distinctive calls.
Where to spot
Widespread across southern Australia, from Western Australia to Queensland, including Tasmania. Found in a variety of habitats including open woodlands, mallee, and forests.
How to spot
Look for large grey birds with yellow eyes and a distinct white patch on the wingtips, especially visible in flight. Listen for their varied, ringing calls which can include 'curra-wong' notes and bell-like sounds.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Can be seen throughout the day. More vocal during the breeding season.
The Grey Currawong is quite versatile in its diet, feeding on insects, small vertebrates, fruits, and seeds, often foraging on the ground or in trees.
