Spotted
The Water Thick-knee (Burhinus vermiculatus) is a nocturnal, ground-dwelling bird found along water bodies in sub-Saharan Africa. Its mottled brown plumage provides excellent camouflage against muddy banks and shingle beds.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, primarily along rivers, lakes, and coastal estuaries. Inhabits sandy or gravelly shores, mudflats, and riparian woodlands.
How to spot
Look for its cryptic plumage blending with the shoreline. It often rests near the water's edge. At night, its presence is often revealed by its loud, wailing calls. Use a spotlight for night observation.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Primarily nocturnal, so best observed at dusk, during the night, or very early morning. More vocal during the breeding season.
