Spotted
The King Bird-of-Paradise is a tiny, jewel-like bird, one of the smallest and most vibrant Birds-of-Paradise. The male is brilliant scarlet red with a white belly, and two wire-like tail shafts ending in iridescent green discs. The female is duller, brownish with barred underparts.
Where to spot
Widespread across the lowland rainforests of New Guinea and the Aru Islands. It typically inhabits the mid to upper canopy of primary and secondary forests.
How to spot
Look for the male's brilliant red plumage and the distinctive tail wires with green discs. Females are camouflaged. It can be difficult to spot due to its small size and canopy dwelling habits. Listen for its high-pitched, metallic calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observable year-round. Males display during the breeding season, often in the early morning.
Despite its small size, the male King Bird-of-Paradise has one of the most striking plumages and performs a unique display, hanging upside down from a branch to show off his iridescent tail discs.
